10 Top Reviews for Crane Drop Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier

1. Mr. Mister is a keeper have had him for 5 years now! Cool Mist Humidifier Recommend!

I purchased the crane drop ultrasonic cool mist humidifier almost 5 years ago. I’m happy to report he’s had a work out and is still going! I would highly recommend it for many reasons.

My husband and I suffer from sinus issues and the dry air is painful for us so this “Mister” is on most of the day and night. I wouldn’t say it’s been continuously running for 5 years, but pretty darn close. Enough to where it’s been nicknamed “Mr. Mister”. Glowing blue is soothing and the shape is modern. I don’t mind having him hanging out with company because he’s hip and COOL! There is a light, but for me it’s not that bright while for others it might be too bright. Just like the occasional burp of bubbles, it depends on the individual.

The Cane Drop Cool Mist humidifier holds 1 gallon of water and the output of mist is easily adjustable. It is VERY quiet with the exception of the burble of bubbles that comes up occasionally. It’s not loud enough to wake me and I’m a light sleeper. The nozzle on top is adjustable all around so you can easily point it in the direction you would like the mist aimed.

This particular unit does NOT require a filter and I’m pleasantly surprised at how clean it stays. I have the older model from 2010 and have used distilled water instead of tap (our tap water is hard). Vinegar to clean it, but I haven’t had to do that but about once a month! See the video instructions on the CRANE site/profile for how to clean it, it’s super easy.

Other reviews indicated furniture damage which happened to be one of my concerns. I will say that if you put the mist on the lowest setting, the mist will fall rather than be pushed up and out. I would suggest if you are worried about that then monitor it before leaving it to ruin surfaces. I’ve not had this problem as I’ve got it sitting on the kitchen counter and when it is running in the bedroom, our nightstand has a glass top that we’ve had custom fit so that the cats wouldn’t jump up and scratch the nice furniture.

The moisture output has been enough to help us both with our sinuses all year round, dry skin in the cooler months, and even soothe coughs when cold/flu season rears its ugly head. The largest room in our apartment has a 14 foot vaulted ceilings in addition to a large stairwell that is easily humidified with our Mr. Mister.

2. My 2nd one – a few tips & insights

This is my second Crane drop humidifier. The first one lasted me 4 years with NIGHTLY use. Since we bought our first one, they’ve changed the design a tiny bit, but it works the same. I use regular tap water in ours and just run vinegar through it to clean it once in a while. After a few nights, it will get a pink film in it from our water – I just use Lysol wipes to wipe it down & disinfect it. I usually get a wet washcloth to wipe off any Lysol residue after, and then let it air dry before using it again. If you use vinegar, you only need one to two tablespoons of WHITE vinegar. White vinegar is a natural disinfectant, and once dry, has no odor. So you can either run some through it, or soak the parts in diluted water for a quick clean.

Our first one was literally used every night – so considering that, it lasted a good while. What happened to it was the fan went ‘bad.’ It started getting noisy and was just plain loud. I disassembled it by removing the four philips-head screws from the bottom. It just seemed the fan was working too hard and was rubbing it’s casing (making a loud sound.) I intended to fix it, or to try to… but I was too rough and snapped the casing. Oops! Had I not messed with it, I believe it would have gone for another year, but with some noise. Lesson learned…

In our old one, we did put essential oils right into the water – though, this voids any warranty and is not recommended. It actually didn’t do anything bad to our unit, but did leave a residue/line in the tank… I could never get that out no matter what I did. I liked doing this because it’s a cool-mist humidifier, it put out no heat. You retain the essential oil properties by NOT heating the oils. Since I bought a new one, I probably won’t put oils in it anymore – but for anyone who cares, it worked fine for me for a few years that way.

The other thing I’ll note, is this thing really cranks! Meaning, it puts out a good bit of humidity on full blast. I’ve never had it make a mess, leave water on the dresser or anything like that, but it did help our dry air. We have a large bedroom, probably 200 sq feet… this one unit did more than enough. I have since bought a hygrometer (like a thermostat, but it tracks the humidity in the room.) This helps me know if I need to crank it up or down… I like this one because it’s cheap, and it has adhesive backing – I just stick it to the back of the unit. It’s intended for reptile habitats, but works for me too. I try to keep it between 50-60. I have to adjust the output (the knob on the front that looks like a volume control) depending on the weather, and how much I’ve used the humidifier lately. This hygrometer helps me to make sure it’s not too dry (hurts my sinuses and airways, which aren’t good for my asthma or allergies), and not too moist (which can breed mold).

Generally, I can get just under two nights out of a full tank on low to moderate ‘power.’ I really love this unit and highly recommend it for anyone – adults or children. I hope this review helps anyone considering this humidifier. It’s great!

3. Great humidifier with no pesky filter to change!

This is a great humidifier! It is easy to use and easy to clean. I bought it to use in my baby’s room and have been using it nightly since it arrived a few weeks ago. Prior to this, we had a humidifier with a filter that molded rather quickly. I was drawn to this humidifier because there is no filter and the reviews were good. I have not had the issue before so it may have been a user mistake, but I did notice there was water around the humidifier this morning like it had leaked a little. I plan to monitor this, but so far this is the only issue we have experienced.

4. great humidifier

This is the second of these humidifiers we have bought and they are both great. My wife has used one of these in her office at work for a few years now, and we decided to get another one to have at home. It puts out a good amount of mist and is really easy to clean and fill. We keep this humidifier in the bedroom, so every night before bed, we fill it up and the water lasts well through the night. It’s very quiet, with the exception of the occasional bubble gurgle as the tank empties into the base, but as far as the actual operation, it’s completely quiet, making it great to use in an office or in a bedroom.

Admittedly, it is a little cumbersome to empty the base every night, but it’s just a matter of unplugging it and pouring the water from the base into a sink. As far as cleaning goes, it’s really pretty easy. The instructions call for using a little bit of vinegar in water to remove any hard water scale that might build up, and we also disinfect it using a very small amount of bleach in water. Basically let the tank soak in the bleach water and then rinse it out really well. We do the disinfection once a week and it seems to work just fine. Honestly, you “should” do this weekly with just about any humidifier, so this is really just part of owning a humidifier.

We started using humidifiers after my wife had sinus surgery several years ago and have needed a humidifier, especially when the air gets really dry in the winter months. We’ve used several different brands and models of humidifiers over the years, and so far, this Crane model has been the best we’ve found when you consider the amount of mist – capacity of the tank – ease of cleaning – lifetime (the one in her office is a few years old and still going strong) and the price/value. It also looks nice too, if that’s something that’s going to influence your purchase decision – ours sits on a night-stand in our bedroom and it actually doesn’t look too obtrusive or like some kind of piece of medical equipment, etc. Some other brands looked a little large and bulky, but the teardrop shape of this one doesn’t have that problem. Overall, we’ve found this to be a great value and to be really helpful in keeping the air moist while we sleep (or in an office environment during the day).

5. Well engineered product

Thanks to all those who have reviewed this crane drop ultrasonic cool mist humidifier. Most everyone helpfully added to the discussion, and it certainly helped me make an intelligent purchasing decision.

A common thread with the negative reviews seemed to be lack of understanding about how to use it. Some reported that it left white residue on nearby objects. Some said it made the floor or furniture damp. Some complained about the wimpy “handle”. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Setting the unit on a mid-range setting using low-mineral content water is the key. We have naturally very soft tap water (TDS 30PPM) so we just use tap water. After a couple of weeks of constant use, there are no mineral deposits to clean and the very fine mist that the unit produces does not make anything in the vicinity wet. Be sure you perform the simple and easy maintenance as explained in the instructions.

The stated output is 2.3 gallons per day. I’m thinking that this must be with the unit cranked all the way up, which very few people will be able to do successfully. Perhaps if the ambient humidity is extremely low, it might work, but for most people the output will be significantly lower. I was worried that, with the 1 gallon capacity tank, I’d have to refill a couple of times per day. For us, the output is about one gallon per day and it keeps the humidity between 32 and 36 percent. Stated room size is up to 250 square feet. We use it in our bedroom which is approximately 340 square feet and has 14 foot ceilings and we normally keep the 3 doors open. It is definitely undersized for our situation, but it is still helpful. It improves the comfort level for sleeping. My wife says that I snore less and that her sinuses are much more comfortable. Currently, the rest of the house has normal humidity in the 25 percent range.

One thing that seems to be ignored in most of the descriptions of humidifiers on Amazon is the power consumption. Ultrasonic humidifiers tend to be energy efficient, while warm mist humidifiers tend to draw a lot of power. I measured the power consumption on this unit and it runs between 8 and 28 watts depending on where you set the dial. The 8 watt setting has almost no output and the 28 watt setting belches out water like crazy. At the min-range setting I use, the power draw is 24 watts, very acceptable for long-term use. Since we use it in the bedroom, I was worried about the noise the unit might make. We live in a rural area and it is usually dead quiet most of the time. Any tiny sound seems like a roar. I set the unit on a mouse pad to protect the furniture and dampen any vibration sound. On our medium setting, when standing right next to the unit, you can hear a slight whisper. From 20′ feet away, where our pillows are, it is essentially totally quiet. I’d buy it again and I can recommend it for my Amazon friends.

6. best humidifier we have found

We have been thru several humidifiers: vaporizer, swamp cooler (water pump, fiber pad, fan), and ultrasonic (rotating disc). Wife likes the humidity because of lung condition.

The Crane, while 2x or 3x the price of what you find at Wal-Mart or Target, is the best we have found. Clean, quiet, cool, fully adjustable. At full power (which we do not normally use) puts out a prodigious plume of heavy vapor. By elegant design, there is less thru-flow of air needed than with our previous ultrasonic; thus less deposit of airborne dust and dirt on the inards. The vapor path is short, smooth, and easy to clean. Also, runs quieter.

The one thing I do not understand is the male threads on the bottom of the tank to which the refill cap/water outflow valve is screwed. The threads are not continuous, but instead are voided at alternate quadrants around the stub. This makes it too easy to cross-thread the cap when screwing it back on. If this device ever breaks, I would buy another one in a heart-beat. I recommend it.

7. Miracle, at least as far as I’m concerned

I bought the Crane drop humidifier, in a panic and out of desperation, to replace a broken Honeywell Warm Mist one. This wasn’t my first replacement attempt – I had also previously purchased a Holmes Cool Mist impeller humidifier with a larger capacity but that was so overwhelmingly loud (think helicopters) even on low, I couldn’t sleep. The actual humidity output on that one was too low on the low setting and the high setting was impossible to live with so I ended up returning it.

With the ultrasonic humidifier like this one, I feel like I stumbled onto a miracle (yes, even though I did a lot of research first). I’m about 9 mos pregnant, have a cold right now and wake up a ton of times related to both of those issues. Every time that I would wake up before (either without a humidifier or with the Holmes one), my eyes would be burningly itchy and in the morning, my skin would need a ton of moisturizer because it would be so dry. This morning, my first one after I received the Crane Drop humidifier and set it up, I didn’t need any moisturizer and still having woken up about 3 times during the night, my eyes didn’t bother me at all! I LOVE THIS THING!

Now, for the not so good. Ultrasonic does not mean silent. It still makes a noise – like a high pitched electronic whine, but I can easily sleep through it. It did bother my husband, but not as much as the other “helicopter” before did. That said, we live out in the boonies so there’s no outside noise at all to cover up the humidifier.

There is no leakage – it’s very important to follow instructions about positioning the humidifier and adjusting the volume so the mist can be properly dispersed and then absorbed by the air. There’s even a picture provided. The single fill lasted all night on nearly the highest setting and I left it running with half the water still in the tank so the humidity can get to proper levels during the day too. I LOVE THIS THING! We also got a kiddie cow one for the upcoming baby and i hear those work even better!

8. Care-free Humidity

I bought this crane drop ultrasonic cool mist humidifier for two reasons: I was intrigued by the design, but more importantly, the humidifier I had been using (a whole different product) was impossible to clean. I cleaned my old one every day, but parts of the internal workings–tubes and pumps–were not accessible, and slime mold built up and took over those areas. Daily leaning helped but I could never get rid of the mold, and wondered how much of the stuff was being dispersed into the air. It was a maintenance nightmare and a possible health concern. I love the concept of evaporative humidifiers, but couldn’t find one that was easily kept clean.

I looked at several ultrasonic humidifiers before choosing this one, some of which were in high-class stores known to sell the best stuff. But they all had internal spaces that would be difficult to reach and clean. But the Crane humidifier could not be simpler to clean; all internal workings are readily accessible. As the manual says, emptying it daily is important, as is weekly cleaning with a vinegar solution. But all parts of the humidifier are accessible and easy to clean including the internal tube through which the mist rises–a bottle cleaner reaches the entire length and surface.

I have city “hard” water, and accordingly bought the recommended filter, and use filtered water in the unit. No problems with white dust or residue of any kind. We have hot-water heat, and the unit humidifies our entire house. Color us fully satisfied.

Bottom Line: This is a well-designed appliance that makes use and cleaning a breeze. And makes our home more comfortable in winter to boot.

9. Best Humidifier EVER

Bought this to replace a humidifier that I had for years. Went with this make/model for several reasons: Price, size, and ease of use and cleaning. This product met and exceeded all my expectations. Very few parts to deal with so it is super easy to use, clean, and maintain. The last humidifier I owned had several unnecessary components which made it harder to clean and allowed for mildew and other buildups, like mineral deposits, to occur. I also recommend watching the video above on cleaning this humidifier, it will give you an idea of how easy it is to maintain.

As far as performance, for the price it can’t be beat. As some others have already stated, I highly recommend reading the instructions. If you put this sucker on full blast chances are everything around it is going to get wet, because it kicks out a crazy amount of moisture. As with all humidifiers, it should be adjusted to only push out what can be evaporated immediately into the air. The tank is relatively small however to give you an idea on how mine is adjusted properly, I only fill it up once every three or so days and I leave it running all the time. Bottom line, great product just make sure to read the directions and you will be happy with the purchase.

10. Great practical humidifier

We’ve gone through 3 or 4 different models of humidifiers and this crane drop cool mist humidifier is the best so far. It is a bit taller and narrower than most humidifiers so it takes up less table space. Because of its shape, it is also very easy to refill. It fits perfectly under the faucet of any sink where in the past, it was very awkward to fill the rectangular shaped ones we’ve previously purchased.

The mist control is great since it is a variable control; not preset 2 or 3 mist levels like many other units. The unit is very quiet with an occasional gurgling as water fills up the base, but it’s not distracting. I think it’s quiet because the motor and fan are not as powerful as other humidifiers so if you’re looking for something for a big room, this may not cut it. It works well for a small bedroom (8’x10′). The rubber stopper that seals off the water container seems to be well made and may last longer than others we’ve had which have disintegrated after high levels of use. The auto shut off feature is great as we don’t need to worry about the unit running all night if it runs out of water mid-way.

Overall, a great purchase at a great price. This will be the standard we use to measure future purchases. Great for small to medium rooms, probably need more than 1 for larger rooms.
